Coal mining will stop if the outstanding balance of Rs 1.4 lakh crore is not paid: From Soren to the Center

Hemant Soren, the chief minister of Jharkhand, issued a severe warning to the Center on Tuesday, stating that if no real attempts were made to pay its coal-related debts, his government would take drastic measures, including pursuing legal action and ordering public sector coal units operating outside the state to cease their mining operations.

"We have been treated like stepbrothers for centuries, and this has to end now," Hemant stated at JMM's 53rd Foundation Day event in Dhanbad. If we make a difficult decision, the entire nation will descend into chaos.

"We owe Rs 1.36 lakh crore in coal-related debts. The Center claimed there were no unpaid debts whenever we asked for our portion. He claimed that even their state MPs are silent in Parliament.

Additionally, Hemant disclosed that at their meeting last month, Union coal minister G Kishan Reddy had requested that he lower the cost of land that coal companies required to purchase for mining. "He informed me that we need to lower our rates because they are greater than those in other states. I declined and informed him that they would need to purchase land at the going rates if they were interested," he continued.

The chief minister also declared that his government will soon begin a huge crackdown on the relationship between government officials and land sharks involved in dubious land dealings around the state. "All BDOs (block development officers) and COs (circle officers), who are hand-in-glove with the land sharks, will be arrested and put in jail, and would be removed from service," Soren said.
